Gordon Schwinn, a songwriter, takes a break from his writing to meet his friend Rhoda for lunch, and ends up in the hospital. He learns that he needs an operation, and if he doesn’t have it, he might die or never recover the use of his faculties. While in the hospital, he contemplates his situation. His greatest fear is dying with his best songs still inside of him; and so, from his hospital bed, he starts writing them. His near-death experience encourages him to better appreciate the people and relationships in his life.
